If you’ve ever opened a tin of Shade All-Natural Sunscreen and noticed a slightly grainy or gritty texture, don’t panic - your sunscreen hasn’t gone bad.
In fact, it’s a completely normal quirk of working with real, unrefined shea butter.
Unlike heavily processed skincare products engineered for factory-perfect consistency, natural butters can sometimes develop tiny grains or crystals as temperatures change during storage or transport.
It’s cosmetic, harmless, and easy to fix.
What Causes the Grainy Texture?
Shea butter contains different natural fatty acids that melt and solidify at different temperatures.
When the sunscreen warms up - for example during shipping, sitting in a hot bathroom, or being left in the sun - those fatty acids can separate slightly as they cool back down.
If they cool unevenly, some parts of the shea butter crystallise faster than others, creating the small grains you may feel in the texture.
It’s one of the most common characteristics of unrefined shea butter products.
And importantly:
It does not affect the safety or effectiveness of the sunscreen.
Why We Don’t “Fix” It With Heavy Processing
Many commercial skincare brands use stabilisers, synthetic texture modifiers, or heavily refined butters to prevent natural graininess entirely.
At Shade, we prefer to keep our formula as natural and minimally processed as possible.
That means occasionally accepting some of the quirks that come with real ingredients.
We’d rather have a sunscreen with authentic shea butter than a perfectly silky product filled with unnecessary additives.
How To Make It Smooth Again
The good news is that fixing grainy shea butter is surprisingly simple.
Here’s how to reset the texture:
1. Gently Heat the Tin
Remove the lid and place the whole tin on a plate over a pan of simmering water.
Warm it slowly until the sunscreen has fully melted.
No microwaves.
No direct flame.
No overheating.
Gentle heat is all you need.
2. Give It a Stir
Once melted, stir the mixture thoroughly with a kebab- or chopstick.
This helps evenly redistribute the natural fatty acids and butters.
3. Let It Cool Slowly
Leave it at room temperature to cool and solidify naturally.
Once reset, the texture should return to its original smooth consistency.
As good as when it was first poured.
Natural Products Behave Naturally
One of the realities of truly natural skincare is that it responds to temperature, seasons, and storage conditions a little more like food than plastic-perfect cosmetics.
Texture changes can happen.
Scent can vary slightly.
Colours may differ from batch to batch.
That’s the nature of minimally processed ingredients.
And honestly, we think that’s part of the charm.
Real Ingredients Aren’t Factory Perfect
At Shade, we could formulate around every natural variation using synthetic stabilisers and industrial processing.
But we choose not to.
Because what matters most to us is keeping the sunscreen effective, skin-friendly, and as close to nature as possible.
Sometimes that means your sunscreen has a little personality.
We’re okay with that.
