One thing we’ve learned making Shade All-Natural Sunscreen is that natural ingredients don’t behave like factory-made chemicals.
And honestly, that’s part of why we use them.
Occasionally, a customer will mention the scent of a particular batch - usually because it smells a little stronger, earthier, or different from the one they had before.
But here’s the important part:
Most batches actually smell very neutral.
Some even carry a softer, slightly tropical scent from the coconut oil we use.
It’s quite rare for a batch to have a noticeably strong or off-putting aroma - but because we use unrefined natural ingredients, subtle variations can happen from time to time.
Why the Scent Changes
Unrefined shea butter is a natural agricultural product, not a synthetic cosmetic ingredient manufactured to smell identical forever.
Factors like:
- harvest conditions
- region
- season
- storage
- and natural composition
can all slightly influence the aroma of raw shea butter. (africanfairtradesociety.com)
That means one batch may smell almost scent-free, while another may have a slightly nuttier or earthier, or even pungent character.
When blended with our other ingredients - especially coconut oil - the overall scent profile can vary naturally.
We Don’t Artificially Standardise It
A lot of skincare brands eliminate these differences by:
- heavily refining ingredients
- deodorising them
- or adding synthetic fragrance to create a perfectly consistent scent
We choose not to.
Because while those processes create uniformity, they also move the product further away from its natural state.
At Shade, we’d rather preserve the integrity of the ingredients than make every batch smell artificially identical.
Natural Variation Is Part of the Product
If you’ve ever bought:
- real olive oil
- raw honey
- artisan coffee
- natural wine
- or handmade soap
you’ll know they never taste, smell, or feel exactly the same every single time.
That’s the nature of minimally processed products.
And while we completely understand that scent is personal - and some people are far more sensitive to it than others - we also think there’s something reassuring about a sunscreen that still smells like actual ingredients rather than synthetic perfume.
Real Ingredients. Real Variations.
Most of the time, Shade sunscreen smells mild, creamy, and neutral.
Sometimes there’s more coconut coming through.
Occasionally the shea butter is more noticeable.
But what you’re experiencing is simply the reality of working with authentic natural ingredients - not artificial fragrance systems designed to smell identical forever.
And for us, that’s a trade-off worth making.
