We’re often drawn to products for a host of appealing reasons: minimal ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, ethical sourcing. And yes, Shade All-Natural Sunscreen ticks all those boxes. But let’s be very clear about something: you don’t buy our sunscreen for the recyclable tin. You don’t buy it for the four natural ingredients. You don’t buy it because it’s reef-safe or plastic-free. Even though you might think you do. You buy it to protect yourself from the sun. That’s it.
All those other things? Great bonuses. But if the product doesn’t do the one thing it’s supposed to — shield your skin from harmful UV rays — then nothing else matters.
Why the white cast matters — and why we won’t apologise for it
We’ve heard the feedback: “It leaves a white cast.” And you’re right — it does, but that white cast is visible proof that non-nano zinc oxide is sitting on your skin, forming a physical barrier against the sun. It’s not soaking into your bloodstream, it’s not introducing hormone-disrupting chemicals — it’s just doing what it’s supposed to do: protect.
To use a simple analogy: you can choose a red, green or orange lifejacket. You can choose one made from recycled materials, or one with the most stylish buckle design, but at the end of the day — you wear a lifejacket to float.
Sunscreen is your skin’s lifejacket. Don’t lose sight of that.
We could minimise it — but at what cost?
Yes, we could add tints. We could nano-size the particles to reduce the white cast. We could make it glide on invisibly like many of our competitors do, but then it wouldn’t be Shade. We made a conscious decision to keep our formula simple, non-toxic, and incredibly effective. Because we care more about long-term health than short-term appearances.
From experience — our founder's father had a rather ugly olive-sized cancerous growth on his temple — we know what’s at stake. That’s why we’ll always prioritise function over finish.
It’s not for everyone — and that’s okay
We understand that not everyone is comfortable with a visible sunscreen. For those with deeper skin tones or for professional settings, the white cast can be off-putting. We respect that. Truly. But before you write Shade off as “not fit for purpose,” ask yourself:
What’s the actual purpose? If your answer is anything other than sun protection, you may need to reframe your expectations.
Choose what matters most
We live in a world of beautifully marketed options, but sometimes, the best product is the one that does the job simply, safely, and with integrity — even if it doesn’t look perfect on first application.
So next time you reach for a sunscreen, ask yourself, "Do I want flawless aesthetics — or real, reliable protection?" because in the sun, it’s not about how you look, it’s about what keeps you safe.
Shade may not be invisible, but neither is sun damage in the long term.
Thank you for choosing function over fluff
To those who love Shade — thank you for recognising its purpose.
To those of you who aren't convinced — we’re grateful you gave it a shot, and we hope you will pass it on to someone who will appreciate it better.
Whatever sunscreen you use, remember: it’s your skin’s lifejacket. Everything else is just branding.
